Jimmy Durante Boulevard is two lanes each direction feeding a single I-5 interchange, and there's no side street shortcut that locals haven't already found. When 15,000 people decide to leave inside the same 20-minute window, that geometry doesn't change no matter how good a driver you are.
What race day traffic actually looks like
Del Mar's lots feed onto a handful of exits — mainly Jimmy Durante Boulevard and the on-ramps to I-5 — and every one of them backs up at once when 15,000-plus people leave within the same 20 minutes. On a normal stakes day, plan on 30–45 minutes just to clear the lot before you've gone a single mile. On Pacific Classic day or a Friday concert night, it can run past an hour. Rideshare drivers know this too, which means pickup requests near the track during that window either get long ETAs, surge multipliers, or both — often at the same time.
None of that is a reason to skip the races. It's a reason to not be the one driving, circling, or standing at a pickup curb refreshing an app.
