December is the month San Diego actually gets crowded after dark. Three things pull most of the county out of the house: Balboa Park's December Nights, the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights, and the neighborhood streets that go all-out with holiday lights. All three are free to see. Getting there and back is the part that costs money and patience. Here's the honest math with our published rates — including the nights when you should skip us entirely.
Everything here is hourly service rather than a flat-rate transfer, because the point is a driver who stays with you for the evening. Our real published rates:
The rate covers the vehicle, the driver, fuel and the stops on your route, and it doesn't move on a busy December weekend.
Getting dropped off at Balboa Park is manageable. Leaving is where plans fall apart. The city's own guidance is blunt: ridesharing will be difficult on Park Boulevard because of congestion, so both sides of Sixth Avenue near the Cabrillo Bridge are set aside as drop-off and pick-up zones. Picture 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, tired kids, and a few hundred thousand other people opening the same app.
With an hourly booking, you agree on the pickup time and spot when you book, and the car that dropped you off is the one that takes you home. A typical Saturday for a family of five from La Jolla or Carmel Valley — pickup at 5:00 p.m., about three hours in the park, home by 9:15 — is a 4-hour booking: $380, or $76 a person. We can't tell you what rideshare surge will be at 10 p.m. that night. That's the point of a fixed number.
The honest alternative: the city runs a free event shuttle with stops at City College, 3rd and A Streets, and Beech Street at Kettner Boulevard, serving offsite parking, trolley and bus riders, with limited free parking at City College. For a couple or a group comfortable with transit, that beats any car — ours included.
The parade is on the water, so the viewing spots are along the bayfront and across on Coronado — and waterfront parking on a parade Sunday fills early. A 3-hour booking ($285 for up to six) covers a drop-off before the 5:30 p.m. start, the parade, and dinner on the way home, without anyone circling for a space. If you live in Little Italy, downtown or the East Village, though, just walk. No car of any kind makes sense for a parade you can reach on foot.
This is the use case where hourly service makes the most sense. Driving slowly past decorated houses with your hazards on is no fun for the driver, and everyone else wants to look out the window — grandparents, kids, the friend in from out of town. A sample 2-hour tour for up to six people:
Two hours, $190 total. Send us your list of streets when you book and the driver will plan the order. If you want to combine North County and central San Diego in one night, book three hours ($285) — the drive between areas eats the time.
For 7–14 people, the Sprinter keeps everyone together, but be honest with yourself about the 4-hour minimum: $720 is a lot for a lights drive alone. If the night is just the lights, two SUVs for two hours ($380 total, when both are available) are cheaper. The Sprinter makes sense when the lights are part of a longer evening — dinner, a party, or a company holiday outing.
Two practical notes: weeknights are calmer than weekends on the best-known blocks, and some streets get slow, bumper-to-bumper traffic in December, so plan on fewer stops than you think.
If the lights night is part of a visit, the airport legs are flat-rate, not hourly: $60 from SAN to Downtown/Gaslamp, $90 to La Jolla/UTC, $115 to Carlsbad and Encinitas, with flight tracking included. Every zone is on our SAN airport car service page, and the Thanksgiving-week version of this advice is in our SAN holiday travel guide.
December is our busiest month — holiday parties, airport runs and events all land on the same weekends, and the Sprinter is a single vehicle in our fleet. For December 4–5 and the two parade Sundays, book a week or more ahead.
Choose Hourly Charter at pacificeliterides.com/booking, add your date, group size, pickup and the stops you have in mind — it takes about two minutes — or call (619) 394-5340. Every rate we charge is on the services page, and group details are on our Sprinter group travel page, so the number you plan around is the number you pay.
